Default Crowdfunding, the new way for charity work, or internet panhandling??

On one of my btech sites someone posted a thread about his desire to set up a 'crowdfunding' page so he could help collect donations to pay off his college debts. Since i never heard of crowdfunding before, i looked into it, and from the 2 sites i went through it seems like a good idea, to get capital to set up small businesses, but the spread of it by people to 'get help' paying off their bills' to me is making it more akin to someone going out on the street panhandling...

How do you all view it?
Does that view change based on what they are 'crowdfunding' for?

Internet panhandling. I may have looked at it differently a few years ago. Maybe I am just fed up with the something for nothing state of affairs.
When things go wrong in your command, start searching for the reason in increasingly larger concentric circles around your own desk.
