Usually when I hear about a server putting something on social media about getting stiffed by [pick a demographic] they end up getting hundreds or (in a couple cases) thousands of dollars to them in donations.

Am sure that wait staff get stiffed by people who are cheap, or forget, or are rude, or are racists etc. I think most of the time it is true, but have grown more and more skeptical as the instances of people posting it (and the subsequent crowdsourcing) has grown more and more frequent.

My daughter recent lost her first tooth, the next morning was thrilled to find a dollar bill under her pillow ... she has two loose teeth and wiggles those every day so she can get another dollar or two ... she also checks the other teeth she can touch to see if they are loose. She got a positive response out of it ... she is trying to replicate it. Undoubtedly some people have seen that some servers got a lot more out of publicizing a shitty customer than they would have gotten from a customer who left a generous tip ...

Damn...a dollar a tooth is the going rate these days? I remember a quarter (though that was more than a few years ago).

Is that what you would love to see? Would that make you feel better about yourself? Would that make your life easier and make you feel a little more equal?

Just loving to see something doesn't mean my life would be better. I know there are many stereo types of demographics who don't tip well. But all of these FB tears for those being stiffed come from supposed white people stiffing black single moms who are just trying to do right by their babies after their dads left and they have to also take care of their grandmothers. I loved the movie "Waiting", didn't change my life, but was funny. :flock

What i was getting (or trying to but messin it up), was in all prior cases i have heard of people getting stiffed on a tip, they were all black customers and it didn't matter the ethnicity of the server. So far, i have not been told by those i know who work in the service industry of a white person stiffing them like that...

I can't stand it either.. If i don't feel like tipping (cause of say poor or below average service) i say so directly to their face (On poor service) or just pay the bill and leave with OUT MAKING a comment if the service was just below par..
I don't scribble a damn note on the receipt..

Based on the # of times in the past where something like this (black person harassed/muslim harassed) that HAVE turned out to be hoaxes where the victim was the one who made a false accusation, i can also understand the skepticism..

I know a few people who don't tip PERIOD. Doesn't matter if its white, black, prussian or martian, man, woman, or Eunuch..

Germans, by and large, do not tip. In Germany, I mean....it's not customary there.

When they do, it's just like a quarter or .50...small change.

Oh, and if you ever do go to Germany...it is rude to leave the tip on the table...you are supposed to hand it directly to the person.

Leaving it on the table leaves them to pick it up as if they are scrapping crumbs...and is considered demeaning. Although, they are understanding of American customs, so you won't get any flack.

I know that it was the same way the when I was first stationed in England. I remember the first time we tried to tip the pizza guy (Asian with a British accent...strange as shit) and he looked confused. It's become more common now, but it's just not something they did.

Asians believe it is disrespectful to tip at all. Like telling the waiter to go buy some lessons. I like the idea of tipping, kind of like working on commission. You try harder to make the sale. But only tip in cash cause then the waiter can hide it from the IRS because taxation is theft.

I don't believe in NOT tipping here in the U.S. That is the cost of the service...you ordered the service, you must pay for it.

You have discretion as to how much...but, I think 15% is an absolute minimum, and is no different than the check itself...you have to pay it, you ordered it, you pay it. I

f you don't like the food or service, you simply don't go back again, but not paying for it this time when you did get service and food is not cool...it would be equally wrong to say, "I didn't like the food, so instead of paying the 19.95, I'm only going to pay $12.50. A 15% minimum tip is understood, customary and part of the wait staff's pay.

...I generally tip 20% and then round up to the nearest dollar.

I almost always tip a minimum of $3 (on small tabs under $15) and 15%-20% (also rounding), except in extreme cases (maybe once or twice in my adult life). The majority of the time it's not the wait staff that's screwing up...the screw ups happen in the kitchen and the waiters have no control. The only times I haven't tipped was when I ended up never seeing my waitress (for refills) in an almost empty restaurant when I could see the entire wait staff standing around BSing with nothing else to do.

I also tip the Commissary baggers a minimum of $3 unless I am going through the express line...then it's $1.
