Will Jamie Chung get the same heat for this role that the Dr Strange crew is getting for casting Tilda Swinton as "The Ancient One", a traditionally Asian character?

The question, I guess, is if it's ok to bitch about white actors playing minority characters but not ok to bitch about it when it's the other way around?

Also, Idris Elba is playing Roland in "The Dark Tower". In the book, Roland is a white guy who has interaction with a pretty big character who is a racist black woman. So not only is this casting changing the race of the character, it's changing it in a way that will actually require changes to the main storyline which, to me, is a far bigger deal than the issues with the other shows I brought up because those don't effect the story at all.
Yeah, big hype about Johnny Storm in the new fantastic 4, whites being Egyptians in Gods of Egypt. Russell Crow playing Noah. Whites cant wear dreds, but Beyoncé can have long straight blond hair. Cultural appropriation is only bad for whites to do, but not anyone else. All of Japan appropriated western culture. Hilary wants to appropriate sharia law. But heaven forbid a white guy wearing a sombrero for Halloween or Swedish salons having a spray tan the makes you very dark.

Glad to see that this thread is working for its intended purpose.

Seems like the only group that isn't allowed to be "diverse" are whites because of the social justice warriors.

Hard for me to word this. I am not 'against' any diversity efforts (officially or personally).

If you ask me what I am doing to "promote diversity", I am applying my full effort to provide a command environment that allows Sailors to meet their full potential regardless of sex, gender, race, religion etc. I don't favor any one race, or gender etc. over another.

I don't have an issue with the various diversity recognition months we have, obviously we can't find a way to recognize every single group that exists out there. Where I think many diversity advocates get it wrong, is that they use diversity to promote one agenda or group's agenda over another or promote diversity for the sake of diversity.

Granted, from a social perspective there are factors that go into whether someone has a better chance of success than others (education, physical prowess etc.) that some people can't control. I don't know that it is the military's jobs to level that playing field. It happens with recruitment quotas, programs like BOOST that find minority applicants who underperformed academically in High School and props them up academically to better compete for ROTC or USNA appointment ... but again, I don't know if it is our job (or should be our expense) to level that field.

Let the best people promote ahead of the others, get the appropriate jobs etc. If they all happen to be white, black, green or blue I don't care, but am smart enough to know all the leadership ended up being white males, that is bad (not that all the best guys are white males ... just an example) ... For a while in the Navy CTI field (linguists), all the E9s were Russian linguists. Where they better for some reason? Not really, in the 80's we needed a lot of RULINGs, so we had a lot, they typically were doing cool 'Cold War' ops and got good evals and awards. Then Arabic became the hot item and ARLINGs tend to populate the senior ranks more.

But, bottom line for me, I know that at levels beyond mine, that diversity in the ranks is a goal and we will execute.

It's not just a goal, it's an ideology and it permeates every decision they've made and therefore every action they've taken.

Racism through lowered expectations. Best way liberals have of still being racist, but being able to accuse those who want a level playing field for everyone of being racist.

I'm not even the type who actively promotes diversity; however... I think that the people who are so vehemently against it have some personal issues. And then, when I go on facebook, and I see that someone who is a minority and/or female becomes a four-star or is tapped to command a UCC; everyone loses their fucking minds and questions the qualifications, and then Google's the person to dig up shit that they did or didn't do throughout their careers.

But don't call them "rayciss" or misogynist. You know, because it isn't true.

Yeah, if Obama has taught us one thing, its that we shouldn't vote for people just because of their race or sex....oh yeah, that's right, liberals are still doing that with Hilary. Gee, cant wait to see how bad she makes it for America. Guess maybe its because the 4 star was tapped by liberals who focus more on gender or race over qualifications, so rational thinking people try to vet their choices before blindly following.

In some / many cases yes. I also know some people who have missed opportunities that they earned (or perceived it to the be the case) in the name of diversity and carry that scar tissue and resentment that goes with it.

Crazy thing, sometimes a lesbian black female may be better at her job than a hetero white male, she should get promoted ahead of him. I do know that in some cases we are putting people in jobs because of their demographic group and I don't agree with that.

I am fairly confident that one way or another that I will see a female President in my lifetime. I don't particularly like Hillary, but get the feeling that so many older women were so desperate to see a female President vice the right female President that they are going to fuck us all over with Hillary for the sake of history.
