    Nellis AFB

I am TAD out here for about 6 weeks.

    1. This gym is amazing, I have never seen anything like this. It is new, only a couple years old.
    2. A lot of running tracks and trails spread around, nice since I am still on east coast time and waking up about 0300.
    3. The whole facility is nicer than most military bases I have seen.
    4. Still trying to find local (non-casino or chain restaurants) to eat at.

I haven't been there in many years but it used to be that the casinos offer some of the best food in Vegas.

I'm from, and currently live in, the area (Henderson). I only get out to that part of the valley when I go to Nellis to pick up prescriptions and routine doctor visits, so I don't get out to that part of town very often (it's about 20 minutes on the freeway). It's a great time to be here as the weather is making the change from summer to winter. If you have any questions I'll do my best to answer (being away for 20 years affected my knowledge of the area as it grew during my time in the AF).

Viva Zapatas on Craig just before reaching the I-15 when driving west from Nellis is the only place on that corner of town that I know of that fits the bill for for good and non-chain near Nellis. I don't get to that end of town very often and it is usually zipping down there for a meeting and quickly leaving so I am not as familiar with it as I was a few years ago.

There are a lot of good places to eat in Summerlin and and a few in Boulder City (the pork chili verde at the Coffee Cup is worth the trip) that fit the bill. I don't make it to the Strip or Henderson very often but Pizza Rock near the Fremont Street Experience is good stuff if you are heading downtown.

The higher end casinos, yes. The el cheapo joints, not so much.

I usually don't like buffets. I don't like watching people behave like gluttons and mouth breath all over the food.

True enough even in my day. There was a wild west themed place far from the strip that didn't have very good food. I am surely dating myself but we used to line up at the hog trough at the Circus Circus Buffet (not sure if that qualifies as a high end place). I once was part of some AF cops TDY to Nellis (well near Nellis, closer to Indian Springs) training with an army unit and on the way in we had a day in Vegas so we all pigged out at the CCB. For about three weeks, living on MRE's, we would all commiserate about the CCB. When the TDY was over the AF OIC gave us two days in Vegas for 'debriefing'. The first night we all rushed to CCB, ate about a quarter of what we wanted to and rushed back to the hotel, many of us yakking. I guess it's a lesson on being careful what you wish for.

I work on Nellis. Go to Memphis BBQ outside the gate, the Mexican Restaurant on Craig before you hit I15, or Robertos on Craig for delicious breakfast burritos. If you like pizza, Grimaldi's is the best, but you need to go to the strip, Henderson or Summerlin for that.

Get "The Bobbie" at Capriotti's Sandwich Shop. Thanksgiving dinner on a sandwich. It was amazing.
