    Different Perks for Different Ranks

No wonder there is no outcry from our General Officers over the 1% cut in retired COLA.
    WTF????

People generally don't get passionate about saving a bennie unless it personally impacts them. It's like asking Airmen's opinions on saving the traditional 20-yr retirement. They don't care.

Re: Different Perks for Different Ranks

This is a recycled USA Today article (not surprising as both fall under the Gannett umbrella). I find it sadly funny that Military Times didn't even bother to correct the blatant inaccuracies. The two that stand out the most are 1) retired pay is not 50% of final pay plus 2.5%/year, and 2) service academy time counts toward retirement. The first is only true if you came in on or prior to 8 Sep 80, and the second is only true if you retire as an "E".

I'm also not sure how they're figuring "base pay for active duty top officers is $181,501." An O-10 over 38 makes $237,156/yr, according to the 2014 pay chart. In order to get the $181,501 figure, you'd have to make less than an O-10 over 20.

I'm sure. The fine print on the pay charts states:

    1) Basic pay for an O-7 to O-10 is limited by Level II of the Executive Schedule which is $15,125.10.
    $15,125.10 x 12 months = $181,501.20

Thanks for the clarification, efmbman. The chart I used had the "limited by" caveat, but it did not specify the dollar amount.

A "cut" in COLA is not a decrease in their retirement pay, it's just less of an increase. BIG difference...

Exactly...hell, I'm happy that I get any COLA increase. It may not be as much as it was but it could also be zero, so I'll take what I can get.

Re: Different Perks for Different Ranks

Each year Military Retirement pay, Survivor Benefit Plan Annuities, VA Compensation and Pensions, and Social Security benefits are adjusted for the rate of inflation IAW Federal law to reflect rises in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The 2013 CPI was 1.5%, hence a 1.5% increase.

How can any thing less than what the law dictates not be considered a cut? And why was only military retirement targeted????

The Senate currently has a bill that would redact the Military retiree COLA cuts, the Comprehensive Veterans Health and Benefits and Military Retirement Pay Restoration bill (S. 1950). Funding would come out of Overseas Contingency Operations money.
