In any case, that five-year-long instructor tour at Sheppard was, overall, a setback for my career path -- probably one of the reasons I eventually became a 1st Sgt. When I volunteered for instructor duty, I was told it was a three-year controlled tour. I knew that meant the AF wouldn't move me for three years, but what I didn't know was that didn't necessarily mean I would move after the three years. Sheppard back then was a black hole -- once it sucked you in you couldn't get out. I eventually got a fellow instructor who knew the cadre at the IDMT school to put in a good word for me so I could get an IDMT class slot. Then I volunteered extended long to Molesworth to finally escape. So instead of evading IDMT, I actually had to pull strings to get it.
They've been forcing folks into it as of the last couple yrs.
