What is a "leader" to you?

To me, it's a Type A personality that wants to be in charge, give orders, bully the weak, influence, and manipulate people as means to an end. Yeah, that's shocking, huh? Most people who have or had real successful careers didn't care about anybody but themselves or else they cared about others as long as it progressed their career.

So many Air Force leaders are stressing leadership, leadership, leadership.......does it not occur to them we need more Indians than Chief's?

Even as a TSgt, I still had my hands tied and couldn't take care of my people the way I wanted to

As a final note, anybody that's been successful in their career will usually have type O blood, who have strong personalities, high testosterone levels, and don't care what others think, whereas Type A's are almost the complete opposite, usually with more docile and submissive natures. Type B's, what I am, are much more complex

If "leaders" in the AF suck, it's because the AF thinks that a 5 EPR and the AF approved leadership traits makes you a good one.

The more you talk about something the less of it you have. Add leadership to the list that includes integrity, sacrifice and patriotism. These are all traits that can easily go unmentioned when they're working right.

A real leader adheres to the standard and enforces the standard no matter how hard. However, he knows to pull people to the standard. If he expects you to be doing PT every day they're doing PT. He wont trample or hurdle people to make rank instead he will use those folks to help him make rank and give credit to them for his achievements as well.

He can motivate you to achieve things you didnt think were possible.

Sometimes it means for them to piss of those senior to them. Falling on their sword.

At the same time they'll call you on your BS. If you're slacking they'll tell you and put that boot in your ass.

This type of leader is rare in the AF. The AF likes to have managers instead of leaders. If you look at the Marine Corps and Army they USUALLY have decent leaders. They're positions even have leader. Platoon leader, squad leader, fire team leader. Where the AF has positions that has manager written into. I know its simply different cultures, but thats what it is. A corporate culter vs a military structure.

Leaders as whole, are becoming more and more scarce in our society.

Ok... you didn't ask what makes a good or bad leader... so here goes... a leader is a decision maker, one that can enforce and standby those decisions, its that simple.

Now we all know not all decisions are good decisions. Hitler for instance was a leader who made very poor decisions, which ultimately made him a bad leader. Now if he had succeeded in world domination, he would have been a great leader.

Agree. There are few leaders anywhere any more, just bosses.

Leaders are willing to make tough decisions and stand by their decisions.

Leaders set the example. They never expect any more from their people than they do from themselves.

Leaders don't pass the buck. The buck stops with them. Leaders are the designated shit-takers for the organization.

When someone screws up, leaders don't yell at them. Instead, they show the person how and where they screwed up, the impact on the mission/unit, and if at all possible tell the person what needs to be done to prevent future repetitions of the mistake.

Leaders are big enough to admit mistakes on their part and apologize.

When a leader calls a meeting, it isn't a verbal masturbation session. The meeting is brief, to the point, and everyone leaves knowing what they need to do.

A leader will do the hard right thing over the easy wrong thing. A leader doesn't go along to get along.

A leader makes the effort and gets out of the personal comfort zone.

A leader never forgets that the organization's most important assets are the people in it.

Leaders delegate authority, but not responsibility. Leaders trust their people to get the mission done, but monitor how things are going, always ready to assist as needed.

Just some thoughts from someone who's always tried to be a leader.

You obey managers because they are manipulating you with a carrot and a stick.

You follow leaders because you would feel ashamed to let them down.
