‘Storming’ Area 51: Internet meme or an actual threat?

It started with a Facebook event page. Not an uncommon occurrence in 2019. Organizers are calling their event, “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us” and their plan is to “see them aliens” at the top secret Air Force facility within the Nevada Test and Training Range. But although it may have started as an Internet joke, Air Force officials aren’t laughing, at least publicly. In fact, they have issued a warning. Don’t go there.

Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews told The Washington Post Friday that officials are aware of the event, scheduled for Sept. 20.

“[Area 51] is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces,” McAndrews said.

More than 540,000 people around the world Friday marked themselves as “going” to the 3 a.m. event. By Tuesday evening, that number had grown to 1.4 million, with another 1.3 million indicating that they are interested.

The event posting has also spawned thousands of memes and battle plans. And while most people seem to be taking it as the joke it was intended to be, hotels and campgrounds in the area are booking up, Forbes reported Tuesday.

Many still regard the government’s few statements about Area 51 with skepticism.
    Who's going?

Okay...surely a joke for most people. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised to see hotels booking up???

I guess some people are going...lol. Probably won't actually try and invade Area 51....maybe this'll turn into some alien annual party-event like a Burning Man or Woodstock...lol

I think a large group of people will attempt to hike out to the base, then get arrested. In the process, some will succeed at videoing the confrontation prior to having their phones/cameras confiscated. Unfortunately, some videos/photos will make their way to a shared cloud, providing the phones ever get back within cellular service range. Nobody will be shot by security, even though "use of deadly force is authorized."

The AOC "squad" will use this incident to further convince followers that Trump is Hitler, due to the 'rough' handling of those poor, innocent Americans who simply have a 'right' to know what is going on in Area 51. In short, the event will be a circus.

I'm thinking this won't end well.

Why do you think they won't shoot?? What's the point in warning folk, Deadly force is authorized, if it won't be used, because of piss poor 'Rules of engagement' or folks not wanting to 'stir things up'?

They won't shoot because they won't need to (unless they're armed). Security can simply let them wear themselves out while trying to hike the first couple of miles in 90+ degree temps (late Sep), then hit them with tear gas or other non-lethal means. The "use of deadly force authorized" sign is really for high speed vehicle gate runner or armed intruder.
