View Full Version : Army allows 3 more Sikh soldiers to keep beards, turbans

"The Army has approved waiver requests for three Sikh soldiers, one reservist and two guardsmen, that will allow them to maintain their long hair and beards as well as wear turbans while in uniform — accommodations also given last month to an active-duty Sikh captain."

"They each received nearly identical memos (http://sikhcoalition.org/documents/pdf/4-8-2016-Kanwar-Harpal-Arjan-Accommodations.pdf) dated April 8 that advise them of the Army's approval of their requests, with conditions. Like the waiver delivered in March to Capt. Simratpal Singh, the memo offers guidelines for wear of the soldiers' hair and turbans, states that the exemption applies only during the performance of "nonhazardous duties," and notes that it periodically will be up for review and could be voided at any time."

I don't see the problem with the memos they sent approving the exemptions. I don't see why the Army can't periodically review any religious exemptions - or any exemption or waiver.

Apparently though: "Such reviews, and the threat of immediate cancellation of the waiver, have led the trio's lawyers to "continue to pursue legal claims on behalf of each of the recently accommodated soldiers to ensure that the Army moves swiftly to establish uniform standards for the service of observant Sikhs and removes discriminatory monitoring and re-evaluation provisions," according to a Monday news release from the Sikh Coalition."

And this:

"The initial complaint seeks "nominal damages" and attorney's fees, and requests the religious accommodations "apply to all Army posts that Plaintiffs will hold in the future, unless the Army makes an individualized showing of a compelling governmental interest that cannot be
satisfied by less restrictive means."

Seems a bit demanding for recruits who haven't even finished IET yet.

I don't see a problem with this. The gas mask/beard myth has been disproven time and again. That seems to be the biggest complaint against this. I mean - look what happened when everyone bitched about the tattoo policy and SMA Dailey came in.

I'm curious to know why only the Army has this exemption. Truth be told, however, I can't help but laugh at the people in the Army who are pissed off about this.

I'm curious to know why only the Army has this exemption.

They are probably the only ones that have needed it so far. I don't know for sure.

I imagine there would be some limitations to the exemption (not able to work on a flightline etc.) ...
