Probably the wrong place to put this so feel free to move it if need be.

I'm trying to figure out why prescription drugs are advertised on TV. What's the purpose? Is there a big issue with doctors not prescribing the best medication to patients?

I was just wondering this the other night. So, you're about the leave the Dr's office and he hands you a prescription for "drug X," and you're going to say, "Sorry Doc, but I saw a commercial the other night touting the awesome benefits of Drug Y, so please cut me a prescription for that instead." Not likely to happen.

Ha ha. Literally as I was reading this thread a Viagra commercial popped on screen (no I do not need it!).
I think the reason for the ads are not so we can tell Dr we prefer X over Y. My experience is that it's up to the pharmacy or your medical plan to determine which drug you receive or if you receive the generic.

I think the reason is to plant the seed in your mind that medication is what you need to make it through each day. Not exercise, diet, spinal manipulation (chiropractic), etc. Seems like the answer to everything is a pill. Guess they've replaced the tobacco, beer, & alcohol ads from the past (which I guess one could say was the "medicine" of the day).

So, you sit at home watching TV and here comes the ad...(low testosterone is on now), that's 2 ads in 10 minutes. Hmmm, I'm over 50...I am slowing down...I self diagnose "Low T"...off to the Dr I go...Dr prescribes "X". Result Dr $, pharmacy $, pharmaceutical $, government $ (taxes). All so I can live (act) like I'm 30 again (even though the rest of my body is 50+). Now my joints are aching...here comes the ad for....and the cycle continues.

I chuckle at these commercials. Sometimes it seems like the side effects are worse than whatever condition you have.

One I saw last night said that taking this product may cause xyz, abc, and suicidal thoughts.

Now why would I want to take that product?

Doctors see sales reps from drug companies every single day. They give doctors all sorts of perks to push their particular medication over a competing brand. If you have ever seen Love and Other Drugs (watch it just to see Ann Hathaway naked) this is a major plot thread in the beginning.

These TV spots are way to try to get a shoehorn in with those doctors who have made 'a deal' with one brand to consider another (when the patient asks for it).
