I just heard about this. The woman who falsely accused members of the Duke Lacrosse team was convicted of murder and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

I'm not a Doc or anything, but she's a complete wack-job. She took the stand in her own defense. Her lawyer SUCKED! I guess she couldn't get former prosecutor Nifong for her lawyer, since he was disbarred and all.

I am not a lawyer, but from what I read her taking the stand was pretty bad for her case.

RS6405 can speak better on this being a good idea or not.

Falsely accusing a Lacrosse team of rape doesn't make you a good witness, especially for yourself.

When the Duke Lacrosse case came out in the news my boss walked in the office and said, "Strippers, beer and Lacrosse players; no good can come from this." He was right.

The main rule on criminal cases is not to put the defendant on the stand. However there are exceptions. I don't practice criminal law, so I am not aware of every reason to do so. Based on the article, Her credibility was already lost due to lying in previous case, and she had prior conduct similar to what she was accused of doing in this case. It might have been a last ditch effort, or even the client insisting that she was to get on the stand.

14 years? What kind of crap is that? Does she get a pass because the victim was African-American?
