View Full Version : So who's going to what restaurant for Vets day?

Well, we are coming on that part of the year when certain restaurants (golden corral, applebees and others) offer free meal deals for military and retirees. Who's going and which restaurant are you going to head too?

I don't go to any restaurants that do this mainly because I see it more as an advertising gimmick than anything else. The same goes with other businesses whose main target group are not military but who use the troops as props to get customers into their stores. There are a couple of businesses I don't mind because their primary clientele are the military like USAA or a military credit union.

I would feel weird going to score a freebie with my ID card.

Just my opinion, but only chuckle-heads and country music listeners go get free meals like that.

I am absolutely astounded that there are people out there rubbing their hands together and mouth watering at the prospect of a free meal at Golden Coral, two weeks in advance!

Loosen the purse strings a little.

This made me laugh probably more than it should have. I've never actually tried the "free meal" thing. One, because the people that do go always complain about how crowded it was, and two, because I wouldn't normally go eat there, I'm not going to go just to save $10-$15 bucks.

Golden corral i will agree. The one year i tried it, it was jam packed, and what gets me is they don't even check to veryfy you ARE military.. So they more than likely get lots of fraudsters in there.
Applebee's at least checks your ID.

IDs? I thought Applebee's served to all Vets, not just ID card holders. Anyway, all of those places are second-rate, chain restaurants that cater primarily to trailer park residents. Golden Corral? If you like scooping pudding that's been sneezed on with a feces ridden ladle, go for it!

Good PR move for them to jump on the "support the troops" wagon, but I think I'll just cough up the $15 and buy myself a tasty local ma & pa meal.

I tried it once a couple of years a go at Texas Road House. Texas Road House is good, but it's not 2 hour wait time good. I'll wait until a regular day and pay full price.
Incidentally, the one time I did eat at Texas Road House, I pulled out my USAA debit card to pay and got a discount.

I will admit that I have gone to get a free car wash on Veteran's Day. It's at the nice car wash, where they hand-dry your car. Since the wash was free, I always leave a big tip for the guys.

The guys in cammo shirts and/or pants (or jauntily festooned hats) and beer guts is all the ID card they need.

This is a different illustration of the preferences of country music listeners. Besides, the last time I used country music to illustrate a point it was perfect.

If anything was muddled, it was your interpretation of my artfully delivered post.

Be careful, you don't want to get us banned for having a squabble. I heard there is a new green rope on the Mod Squad that is itching to get his first ban under his belt.

Squabble all you want, in this thread the most pertinent squabble would look to be whether the chocolate fountain at Golden Corral is better than the Denny's caramel apple crisp. Both offer a Veteran's Day special.

I went to a conference sponsored by the Jamestown Foundation in an upscale hotel near the Pentagon a couple of years ago and saw a Northrop Grumman contractor stick his finger into the chocolate fountain.

I'd imagine that the chocolate fountain at the Golden Coral is molested and violated as if it were a participant in one of Caligula's orgies.

In my experience the GC chocolate fountain is a magnet for the kids...........I avoid it.

I think they should station a life guard beside the chocolate fountain to rescue any Swedish meatballs that get dropped into it.

Oh, and check out the cowboy talking about s'mores! LOL!

The music they have running in the background of this commercial is reminiscent to the soundtrack of a 1970s porn movie.

I wish I was allowed to make, what best equates to, xenophobic comments. I guess rednecks are free game, huh mods?

I think he used the term "cowboy" not "redneck". The man is wearing a cowboy hat and has a pretty distinguished accent and I don't think "cowboy" is derogatory.

This is an Off Duty thread (supposed to be the more 'fun' area that many say doesn't exist on MTF.), try to keep it fun.

You might want to try explaining yourself better, because the word xenophobic doesn't make sense here.

xen·o·pho·bic [zen-uh-foh-bik, zee-nuh‐]
adjective
unreasonably fearful of or hating anyone or anything foreign or strange.

You're right. It would have been better without the "unreasonable" caveat. What do you call being reasonably fearful or hating of something foreign or strange? Everyone thinks his fears and hates are reasonable, don't you think? I think the mods should decide.

/Decision made

Unreasonable: being fearful because of the color of someone's skin, religion (or lack of), the search bar in an Internet forum

Reasonable: fear of bears (not the cuddly ones), large sharks or anything else that could devour me.

I guess that, since you didn't say anything to him, that you think stereotyping southerners is fun. Can you please update the rules to clarify the mods definition so I won't make the same mistake again? Maybe "fun" like a "fun run" is your idea? Or squadron picnic fun? Tomorrow, when this site isn't running so damn slow I will move this post to the proper section.
Thank you

Don't like big crowds, but I appreciate those companies (and all the local places) that offer discounts, etc. to military and veterans. Not a GC fan, but Applebee's is okay.
Local restaurant here in Rapid City called Colonial House. On two occasions we had a unit lunch with about 20 or so in attendance. When we went to pay, we were told it was taken care of. Other patrons, referred to as the CH Family, had covered our entire bill.

I appreciate it to. Of course it's a marketing ploy, but that's fine. On a related note (trying not to take this off topic) we had a tech school student at the Commissary yesterday ask if there was a military discount. Pretty good stuff.
