Just got paroled and growing a goatee. Why? Because I can. Not sure if this is just a phase that most newly freed men go through. Some retirees stay in regs (can't let go?), and some let it grow. Which one are you?

Note: if you're still in the AF and dreaming of retirement, I promise it's a GREAT feeling!

I saw a retired AC-130 gunner looked like a homeless guy except he was driving a shiny well taken care of F-150. Also had the first Sargent sticker on his windshield. He had long hair, I mean down passed his shoulders, and a beard that would. Mke the he guys from duck dynasty proud.

I would love to let my hair grow out, but my wife "makes" me shave it. It's probably for the best since a lot has happened since I was in high school with my long flowing mullet. My forehead has gotten a lot bigger, and as my wife calls it, the moon in the back of my head had gotten bigger. I would probably look like Hulk Hogan.

I've gone full circle. When I retired I started the goatee and pony-tail. After about five years I saw a joke in readers digest that called middle aged men with long hair a "desporadoo" (sp?). Looked in the mirror and it hit me. Now I'm back to almost regs.

From the day my wife's grandfather enlisted though his retirement as a pilot Lt Col (with no degree) he had the same hair cut. He was clean shaven until about 6 months before his death when it was to dangerous to shave under his nose or around his chin, so he always had a short trimmed goatee. That man never changed.

TSgt"M",

Desperado.

My head hair is long, down to the middle of my back. My beard gets trimmed when I see a barber. Which is never. I do NOT let the beard take over my neck, though.

Grew the goatee as soon as I started terminal. But I refuse to be bothered grooming hair so every coupla' weeks I simply clip it all to about one-quarter-inch. I don't own a comb or a brush. Don't have gels or mousse. Don't condition. Wash it and forget it, I say.

Hair is rapid turning grey...actually I look older with it growing out so I keep it cut the same as on AD. Beard is also grey, so full shave there. Easier when riding the H-D, no bad helmet hair, and the wind whipping through a beard tickles. Rode in a American Legion parade yesterday...I think I was the only retiree (below the age of 70) that was clean shaven with a short hair cut. I think there were a few in their 70's sporting the pony tail look as well. To each his/her own!!

Retired AF grooming standards? What standards?

Just before I retired, out Group commander's secretary asked if I was going to grow my hair long or have a beard or mustache? I said no, my hair may be a bit longer but I won't look like a geriatric Hippie. The only time I had a buzz or high-tight hair cut was in Basic Training. Since then, its always been long but within regulations and now that I'm retired my hair is slightly longer. I keep the hair slightly longer because when I get a hair cut my head is about 75% gray whereas with longer hair it's only about 50% gray.

Betting no matter what grooming is attempted, people still can tell you were an officer.

That's if the "Major" decal on my windshield doesn't tip them off first.

Now I know you're joking, but how lame are those people who put rank stickers on their windshields or back windows? Even worse are those people who get license plate frames bragging about their rank. OK, you're were Master Chief, big f'in deal. You still had to salute Flaps. /troll

I've seen Marine sergeant decals on cars. I want to say I've even seen an Army PFC decal on a car. Amazing. I have no rank decal on my cars. The blue sticker is enough.

Far as grooming goes, I keep what little hair I have close-cropped. Still have the delusion if the hair is short the gray and white hair isn't as prominent.

I shave every day. If not, the beard comes in mostly white. Last year when I had the surgery couldn't get out of bed to shave for a few days. When I finally got to the sink to shave I looked like someone's grandfather. Was glad indeed to shave.

Marines are terrible for this. It is kind of nice, then you can jack them up for knowing better when they do stupid shit out in town. If you're going to scream out you're a Marine, then you will be held accountable at all times.

Personally, I hated having a damn DOD sticker on my car, nonetheless my "rank." I enjoyed flying under the radar when off duty.

This is how I envision you looking cutting loose

and your car having this on the bumper

Holy crap, where did you find that Major emblem? That works better for me than Viagra!

Back on topic, I notice people on here complaining about white/gray hair. WTF? My gray facial and head hair is really showing now, and I think the college girls at my new pool are attracted to me because of it. Seriously, I think the grayness makes them want me more. Time to convince the wife that my pool breaks are my time to be alone and meditate.

That. Is. Awesome. I would get a t-shirt with that on it and wear it to the commissary anytime.

I grew a full beard. kept it through college and my first job after college. Then when I went to work for Continental and UPS Airlines I had to shave it off. The college girls loved the beard, but the older females after college did not like it and were glad when I shaved it off. Since I retired a second time I started a beard, but it came out grey in spots and looked funky, so I shave every day now. It was fun to grow one though.

Kept it up for 7 months until I went home on R&R and then buzzed it off... glad to be high speed/low drag again! Was good for a laugh... :rockon

Some years back at the commissary I saw a guy wearing a shirt that said, "Joe Blow, Colonel, USAF, Retired". Couldn't believe it. Dude, nobody cares. I don't wear any "retiree" clothing and have no "retiree" stuff on my car, nothing besides the base sticker.

I don't have anything other the an AF logo decal on the back window of my car. Soon after July 1st, I'll remove the base decals because the Navy is doing away with them.

As for t-shits, I still wear AF base t-shirts. They're a solid color with an emblem and name of the base on the left side. When I take a long walk, I'll wear a hat with the AF logo simply because I'm retired AF in a Navy town. I don't have anything on my car or wear anything that shows my rank because that's really tacky.

When I went on terminal leave a decade and a half ago, I had purple hair and grew a full beard. Subsequently I had white hair, blue hair, and fire engine red hair. On weekends or when on leave, I don't shave and don't comb my hair unless it is a special occasion.

That anwer your question?

I sport a goatee and shaved head.

I shave my head and trim the goatee once a week on Monday, always good to start the work week looking sharp

...the rest of the face gets shaved approx. 3 times per week, M-W-F.

I arrived at BMT with long hair in 1976 and since retiring 2.5 years ago have only had one hair cut that took about a quarter inch of the ends. Goatee and hair to the middle of my back and both are gray and silver with a few brown ones left. Forehead a bit higher than the last time I had long hair but no problem. Not trying to make a "retired' statement - just like long hair and don't give a rats ass what others think - including the SNCOs and Os at the MAJCOM HQ where I work.

I did the Goatee thing, then had alternated between shaved and unshaved for 5 years. I wear my hair at about 2 months growth. I'm not allowed to go with the flat top anymore. It's always heartwarming to hear her tell me that my head is too big to wear short hair.

I did contemplate two doos that I missed during my time served. I wanted to try out a rockin mullet, or the "Flock of Seagulls" doo. Sadly, the New Jersey devil woman won't let me have any fun with my hair.

I have been growing an enviable waistline since retirement.

I think compared to what I saw today, an AF sticker is nothing. A hummer truck that apparently belongs to a MSgt. How would I know? Glad you asked. Not only was United States Air Force plastered on the back window, in each of the four corners were; A1C stripes, SrA stripes, SSgt stripes, and TSgt stripes. In the middle....MSgt stripes. If that wasn't bad enough, it acutally had the airman's creed PAINTED on the tailgate....

Keep the hair short because I could never grow long hair anyways. It would just bush out, plus it hides the greys. But I kept the goatee for almost a year. Kept it neat, didn't look like a slob. But I shaved it here not too long ago. I will probably grow it again after the summer.
